The Mekong River

The Mekong River is the world's 10th rivers in its river length and has great influences upon nature and societies of the Indo-china Peninsula. The name "MEKONG" originate in Thai language, Mae Nam Khong. The source of the Mekong River is in Tibet mountains and is called Dza Chu River (River of Rock). After running through very narrow valley paralling Yangz Jiang and Salween River, the Mekong reach to Yung-Nan Province of China and is called Lancang Jiang (Turbulent River). Via Golden Triangle, the crossing of China, Myanmar and Laos border, the Mekong flow into Vientiane Plain. The Mekong river between Luang Prabang and Huay Xay has a character very different from the one better known in its Vietnamese delta. Here it is still narrow with rapids, and traverses luxuriant mountainous landscapes. On the way, you see small villages and hamlets which can be reached only by the river, where tourists are seen so little that they are still and object of curiosity. The term, Lower Mekong means downstream segment from the point. There are some notorious rapids for French navigation plan in colonial period before the Mekong get to Cambodia, and the last segment is the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam, which distributes grate influences to agriculture, especially paddy fields there.

I-San, along the Mekong

I-San, the local name for Northeast Thailand, denotes prosperity and vastness. Here the Mekong may separate Thailand and Laos physically, but they share much in history and culture. Buildings combine both Thai and Lao styles. In Surin, Buri Ram and Pimai the Khmer influence is strong. The annual Elephant Roundup in Surin is one of Thailand's most famous events.
Archaeologists uncovered bronze objects in Ban Chiang that predate the Bronze Age in the Middle East. Countless pots with unusual swirling patterns were judged to have been made around 3,000 BC.

Ubon Ratchathani is known for its pre-historic rock paintings.
