Khon Kaen, 445 kilometres from Bangkok, is situated right in the centre of the Northeast or I-San. Prehistoric civilizations once flourished in this region, and it is where the first dinosaur fossils were discovered in Thailand. Khon Kaen offers a large number of historical and cultural attractions, as well as several jungles, winding rivers and mysterious caves. Established in 1783, Khon Kaen today is one of the principal hubs for tourism, transportation, development and education.
Bung Kaen Nakhon is a lake in the southern part of town, also a popular spot with food stalls selling local specialities. Khon Kaen National Museum has a large collection of artefacts discovered at archaeological sites at Ban Chang and Fa Daet Song Yang in Kalasin province. Phra That Kham Kaen is a 19-metre high chedi at Wat Jediyaphum. The province derives its name from this chedi. Koo Puai Noi is the biggest Khmer complex in Khon Kaen.
The Silk Festival is held annually from November 29th to December 10th, to promote silk weaving and silkworm culture. Dok Khoon Siang Khaen flower festival is held annually from April 13th to April15th featuring colourful floral processions, various religious rites as well as I-San music and dancing. Many souvenir shops in the town sell quality local products such as silk, cotton and silverware.
